712 North Inc. Proposes New Structural Paradigm for OMA1 Protease in BBA – Proteins and Proteomics Publication

October 29, 2020 — 712 North Inc., a pre-clinical pharmaceutical company specializing in mitochondrial medicine, announced today the publication of a new research study entitled “OMA1—An integral membrane protease?” in the journal BBA – Proteins and Proteomics.

The study introduces a novel homology model that challenges long-standing assumptions about the physical structure of OMA1.

“The prevailing opinion in the field is that OMA1 is anchored to the inner membrane,” said Dr. Marcel V. Alavi, CEO of 712 North. “But our OMA1 homology model suggests that OMA1 actually is an integral membrane protease, which is quite a paradigm shift. Understanding the true topology of this protease is essential if we hope to successfully design drugs that modulate its activity.”

This research was supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), highlighting the importance of fundamental mitochondrial biology in the fight against Alzheimer's and other age-related diseases.
